A Rangers first-team defender has found himself at the centre of controversy after admitting to drink-driving and careless driving offences following an incident earlier this year.

Sterling, 26, pleaded guilty to driving at what was described in court as “excessive speeds” through several busy streets in Glasgow, including Queen Street, Hope Street, and West Graham Street. The court heard that the journey ended when Sterling lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a protective barrier near the M8 motorway. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the circumstances surrounding the crash were enough to prompt immediate police involvement.
Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday, Sterling admitted to a charge of careless driving. In addition, he pleaded guilty to driving with alcohol levels significantly above the legal limit. Tests revealed he had 60 microgrammes (mcg) of alcohol in 100 millilitres (ml) of breath — nearly three times the prescribed legal limit of 22mcg per 100ml.
Sheriff Mary Shields imposed a £750 fine for the careless driving offence and an additional £1,500 fine for drink-driving. Alongside the financial penalties, Sterling was disqualified from driving for 12 months, a punishment that reflects the seriousness of the offences.
During proceedings, fiscal depute Christa Lindsay provided a detailed account of the incident. She explained that police were called to the scene in the early hours after a concerned witness reported a vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers found Sterling outside the vehicle, speaking on his mobile phone.
According to Lindsay, Sterling informed officers that he had not sustained any injuries. He reportedly stated that he had lost control of the vehicle, veering toward the protective barrier before colliding with it. Officers at the scene noted that he appeared to be in a dazed condition.
“Police said the accused appeared to be in a dazed condition,” Lindsay told the court. “He was cautioned and required to provide a specimen of breath. He co-operated and failed the roadside breath test and was subsequently taken to a police station.”
The court also reviewed CCTV footage that captured Sterling’s driving in the lead-up to the crash. The footage reportedly showed the defender driving in what was described as an “uncontrolled manner,” at one point narrowly avoiding a collision with another vehicle in the city centre.
Prosecutors stated that Sterling’s driving was erratic, with moments where he had to brake heavily to avoid hitting other road users. While there was no exact speed recorded from the vehicle’s speedometer, it was estimated that he was travelling well above the 30mph speed limit in the area.
When asked by Sheriff Shields about the duration of the journey, the court heard that the distance covered was approximately 1.5 miles. Despite the relatively short distance, the nature of the driving raised serious safety concerns.
Initially, Sterling had faced a more severe charge of dangerous driving. However, this was later reduced to careless driving, a decision that likely influenced the final penalties imposed by the court.
Representing Sterling, defence lawyer Ronnie Simpson acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and made it clear that the player accepts full responsibility for his actions. He emphasised that Sterling understands he should not have been driving under the influence of alcohol.
Simpson told the court: “His employer has imposed a financial penalty on him. He had been celebrating the conclusion of an important day at his place of work. He is under no illusion that he should not have been driving. He recognises the seriousness of the situation and has already faced consequences internally.”
