Setback or Season Over? O’Neill Insists ‘We’re Not Finished’ After Damaging Dundee United Loss

O’Neill Urges Calm Despite Setback as Celtic’s Title Challenge Faces Pressure

Celtic’s 2–0 defeat to Dundee United at Tannadice has intensified the pressure in the Scottish Premiership title race, but manager Martin O’Neill remains adamant that his side is still firmly in the fight.

Speaking after the match, O’Neill described the result as a significant setback, acknowledging that with only a handful of games remaining, Celtic can ill afford many more slip-ups. Despite that, his message was clear and consistent—this is not the end of their title push.

He admitted the performance fell below expectations. Celtic controlled possession for long periods in the first half but failed to create meaningful chances. After conceding early in the second half, the game quickly slipped away, and the team struggled to regain control. O’Neill also pointed out that his players didn’t adapt well enough to the conditions and lacked the necessary edge in key moments.

Even so, he remained defiant. He stressed that while the defeat is a blow, the season is far from over. With a short break before their next fixture, he believes the team has an opportunity to reset, reflect, and come back stronger.

As it stands, Celtic sit third in the table, trailing leaders Hearts and sitting just behind Rangers. The title race remains tight, with three teams still in contention, but momentum has clearly shifted.

Reactions to the result have been mixed. Some see it as a major dent in Celtic’s title defence, pointing to a lack of urgency and creativity in recent performances. Others believe O’Neill’s experience could prove crucial, especially with time to regroup and refocus ahead of the final stretch.

There is no doubt the challenge ahead is steep. Celtic may need to win most, if not all, of their remaining matches to stay in contention. With both Hearts and Rangers maintaining strong form, the margin for error has all but disappeared.

For now, O’Neill is focusing on belief and resilience. Whether that optimism proves justified will become clear in the weeks ahead as the title race reaches its decisive phase.
