Celtic’s NEXT Captain Mystery Deepens… Brown Drops a Name, But It’s Not Fully What Fans Expected

Celtic FUTURE UNCERTAIN: Brown Drops Cryptic Hint About Next Captain Role

Scott Brown believes Celtic already have their next captain lined up, with Kieran Tierney seen as the natural successor to Callum McGregor when the time comes.

Brown also reflected on how leadership at Celtic has evolved across different eras, highlighting the contrast between his own outspoken style and McGregor’s more composed, lead-by-example approach. Despite those differences, both have delivered sustained success at Parkhead.

When Brown departed in 2021, McGregor’s rise into the captaincy role felt like the obvious next step, and he has since enjoyed a highly successful spell filled with trophies and consistency at the top level.

However, while Brown admits he is unsure who could step beyond McGregor and Tierney in the long term, he remains confident that Celtic’s leadership structure is secure for years to come.

Speaking on The Warm-Up, Chris Sutton raised the question of who might emerge as the next leader at Celtic, referencing past captains such as Neil Lennon and McGregor.

Brown replied:

“I think Kieran (Tierney) will be the next one. Cal (McGregor) still has a lot to offer. Then I think it’s natural for Kieran to step in for captaining once Cal retires, if I am honest. I think Cal has got a few good years in him. After that, looking there, I don’t know too much about the young ones if I’m honest.”

Marcelo Saracchi’s agent Marcelo Tejera on Celtic talks

Meanwhile, Celtic’s recruitment plans have also been in focus, with Marcelo Saracchi’s agent Marcelo Tejera revealing ongoing discussions over the player’s future.

Speaking to Carve Deportiva, Tejera confirmed Celtic’s strong interest and positive internal feedback around the defender’s impact.

“It came up at Celtic, Marcelo was fascinated, Celtic are delighted with him,” he said.

“I even have a meeting with the CEO of Celtic because they want to start moving forward regarding the purchase.

“Let’s see how things go from here until the end of the loan. If it’s good to leave it there, then it’s good that he can go to a team in England who called me…”

Tejera also praised the influence of Martin O’Neill, sharing an anecdote about the Celtic manager’s reaction to Saracchi’s early performances.

“Good news from the coach, Martin O’Neill, who is historic. In the first match I visited, he didn’t know the team… so he made him a starter, and at half-time he asked: ‘Who are you? Who are you that you play so well and I don’t know you?’ Imagine, in the first match!

“And the other day, against Stuttgart, it was half-time and he shook his hand in front of the whole group, congratulating him. I was explaining to Saracchi: this is not normal, that a coach of Martin O’Neill’s level does this with a player.”
