Celtic’s search for left-back reinforcements has taken another unexpected turn, and the latest development could force the Parkhead hierarchy to pivot their recruitment strategy once again this summer.
With the Scottish Premiership season already under way and the transfer window still open, the race for defensive cover has intensified across Europe, leaving one of Glasgow’s biggest clubs facing the real possibility of missing out on a player they had identified as a practical solution to a long-standing problem.
The issue stems from the fitness concerns surrounding first-choice left-back Kieran Tierney. While the Scotland international remains a high-quality option when available, his injury record has repeatedly forced Celtic to look for reliable alternatives. Last season, the arrival of Boca Juniors loanee Marcelo Saracchi provided exactly that kind of insurance.
The Uruguayan performed well enough that many expected a permanent deal to follow. Those talks, however, collapsed earlier this month despite the player’s own interest in staying. That failure left a clear gap in the squad, prompting the club to cast the net wider for options who could step in without disrupting the balance of the team.
One name that rose quickly on the shortlist was a 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international currently plying his trade at Dundee United. His form over the past couple of seasons, culminating in a Player of the Year award after an impressive 2025/26 campaign, made him an attractive proposition for a club needing immediate depth. Yet the path to securing his signature has grown more complicated in the last 24 hours.
Belgian side Anderlecht have “opened talks” with Dundee United over a potential move for Will Ferry, according to a report from the Daily Record. The Pro League club, managed by Vitor Bruno, are no strangers to the Scottish market. They have already completed a £4 million deal for Rangers winger Oliver Antman, demonstrating both the willingness and the financial capacity to recruit from the SPFL. Their long-term interest in Ferry has now moved into active negotiation, throwing a significant obstacle in Celtic’s path if they hope to finalise a deal of their own.
This is not the first time Ferry’s future has been the subject of serious discussion. Last month, Czech side Sigma Olomouc had an accepted offer on the table, understood to be worth up to £1.7 million including add-ons. The player and his representatives ultimately decided against the move, choosing to remain at Tannadice for the time being. That decision kept him available for Dundee United’s opening fixtures, and he started in their 1-1 draw against Rangers on Friday night. Prior to that, he had been training with the academy amid the speculation before being restored to the first-team picture for the closing stages of the Premier Sports Cup group phase.
Interest in the defender remains widespread. Newly promoted Bundesliga side Schalke continue to monitor the situation, while Championship clubs Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers are also understood to be keen. The volume of suitors underlines both Ferry’s current value and the competitive environment Celtic must navigate if they still wish to pursue him.
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin has made his own position clear. Speaking earlier in the week ahead of the Rangers match, he told Sky Sports: “Will Ferry is still a Dundee Utd player, it’s as simple as that. It’s been well-documented that a few weeks ago, we accepted a considerable offer for him. Will and his representatives mulled it over and decided that wasn’t an opportunity that they wanted to pursue. As a manager I’m absolutely delighted because he’s been one of our best players over the last couple of seasons and we’re delighted to have him here.”
Should Anderlecht succeed where others have so far failed, Celtic would be forced to look elsewhere for left-back options. One name already linked with a return is Greg Taylor, the former Celtic defender now at PAOK in Greece who has fallen out of favour. Another possibility is James Penrice, the former Hearts full-back currently at AEK Athens. Penrice still has two years remaining on his contract, which could complicate any approach, but he sits on Celtic’s shortlist as a potential alternative.
The situation remains fluid. With Anderlecht having made the first concrete move in the last day and other clubs still circling, Dundee United hold a strong position. Celtic, meanwhile, must decide quickly whether to escalate their interest or accept that this particular target may now be slipping out of reach. In a window already marked by collapsed negotiations and shifting priorities, the next few days could determine whether the Hoops secure the cover they need or are left scrambling for a different solution before the window closes.
