The former Hoops star was in town for Japan’s 1-0 win over Scotland at Hampden Park, where Daizen Maeda captained his side on familiar ground. However, it was Nakamura’s activities off the pitch that truly stole the spotlight.
On Friday, he met with current Celtic defender Kieran Tierney at training, sharing a touching moment that brought back memories of when a young Tierney once received a pair of boots from the Japanese maestro — a symbolic link between two generations.
Saturday saw Nakamura make his long-awaited return to Celtic Park for the first time in 12 years. The visit was filled with emotion, as he was warmly welcomed and reunited with former teammate Neil Lennon. The atmosphere was nostalgic, celebrating a player who left a lasting legacy at the club.
“I have to say I was overwhelmed by the welcome I received on my return to Glasgow. The welcome was more than I expected and people called out to me wherever I went. I was delighted to meet Kieran Tierney and thrilled that he has reached the very top as a player. Celtic Park was exactly how I remember it. There were some renovated parts, but it was nostalgic for me. I was happy that my captain Neil Lennon came to see me as a surprise.”
