Ex Newcastle Boss Chris Hughton Opens Up on Cancer Scare After Years of Silence

Former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has opened up about a personal health battle, revealing he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.

The 67 year old remains a hugely respected figure among Newcastle fans, many of whom still feel he was unfairly treated during his time at the club.

Hughton was dismissed by then owner Mike Ashley after a 3 1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, despite having guided the team back to the Premier League.

His departure sparked strong reactions across the football world, with supporters, former players and pundits all questioning the decision. Alan Pardew was brought in as his replacement, but many have continued to wonder how things might have unfolded if Hughton had been given more time.

Hughton has now confirmed he underwent treatment following his diagnosis and chose to have surgery to remove his prostate. The procedure was successful, and his recovery has been positive.

Reflecting on the moment he received the news, Hughton explained that he stayed calm and focused. Rather than fear the worst, he approached the situation with a practical mindset and trusted the medical advice given to him.

Now one year after the operation, he says he feels strong and full of energy. Staying active both physically and mentally has played an important role in his recovery, and he remains in a positive place.

Since leaving Newcastle, Hughton has managed several clubs including Birmingham City, Norwich City, Brighton and Nottingham Forest, as well as the Ghana national team. He has been out of management since 2024.

It is believed he acted quickly after noticing early signs, and with regular medical checks, the condition was caught early.
